SXSW RECORD BINGE!
So, my Tetris skills have reached the brink. I’ve run out of room and some records need to go. See that wall? Most (not all, just ask) are HALF OFF!!! See the Island? Those are 10% OFF! Come Haggle, Come Barter (beer always makes me weak). That wall MUST GO!! The store will be getting revamped. I’ll still carry good records, just not as many. Come git ’em!
DeVore Fidelity and Box Furniture
The Brooklyn Navy Yard! Lots of weird, top secret activities have gone down here over the past 60 years. The coolest thing to come out of here is DeVore Fidelity and Box Furniture!!
Here’s Tony Abbate from Box. We were listening to the new DeVore Gibbon X playing through the excellent Leben CS-600 integrated amp from Japan. Box not only make excellent equipment racks, but also the enclosures for DeVore’s speakers. They are literally located next to each other. Once again, proof there are still quality products made in the USA!
Lou Lou Bear is the CEO of DeVore Fidelity… No, seriously! I’m not kidding! She rules the roost! I love me some Lou Lou Bear. John probably thinks I came to visit him… heh heh.
High Water Sound NYC
High Water Sound is located at the base of The Brooklyn Bridge in a building built in 1836! Ever seen the film, Gangs of New York? I’ve wanted to meet Jeff Catalano for years so I called him up… “Yeah, sure man! Come on over!” Super nice guy with a music addiction as severe as mine.
Ever hear Black Sabbath on $200K Cessaro horn speakers driving by 1.5 watts? Me neither! It was pretty intense!
The front end of the system was a tw-acustic raven black night turntable fitted with a Miyajima Labs cartridge, Tron Seven phono pre and line stage to Hørning Hybrid SATI mono block amps. whoa!! This is taking things to a different level fo’ sho’!!
Grado Labs in Brooklyn, NY
Grado Labs has been operating out of the same nondescript location in Brooklyn since 1953! I had the opportunity to meet with John Grado and John Chen last week while I was in town. I wanted to see first hand the legendary digs and find out more about this great American company!
Before my visit, I had no idea that Grado made every part in house! The injection molding machines are over 60 years old! Don’t fix it if it’s not broken!
Grado employs just a handful of people. They all seemed very focused and content working for such a great company! Grado are proof that the USA has, and still can, make quality products! I’m very proud to be a dealer for them.
